Anniston Airport Fire Department
The City of Anniston Fire Department has a permanent station located at the Anniston Airport. This station is manned 24/7 and is prepared to handle any aircraft emergencies that may occur.
The station maintains an Airport Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) vehicle manufactured by Oshkosh that has the potential to travel up to 70 mph to arrive at the location as quickly as possible. The AARF can also spray up to 3000 gallons of foam per minute and does not require the firefighters to exit the vehicle due to the main turret being operated by joystick inside the cab. The firefighters that are assigned to the airport station also receive a higher level of training. In order to become an airport firefighter, they must complete a 40-hour training course and also a 16-hour training course to operate the AARF. This training is on top of the regular training that Anniston firefighters are required to receive and maintain.
If medical emergencies arise, the AARF will also respond to begin immediate treatment until an ambulance can arrive on scene. Each firefighter is a trained EMT, Advanced EMT, or Paramedic.
